Green Series — Phonograms

The Green Series systematically introduces the phonograms that make English only partially phonetic. Each phonogram is isolated, its words studied, and the child gradually internalizes the patterns that underlie fluent reading. Misreading produces a nonsense word, and the child self-corrects by revisiting the phonogram color-marked in the word.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Select a folder, e.g., 'sh.' 2. Lay out the picture cards in a row. 3. Pick a word card, read it slowly ('/sh/-/i/-/p/ — ship'). 4. Place it beneath the matching picture. 5. Continue until all words are matched. 6. Note together how /sh/ appears in each word. 7. Move through each folder systematically. 8. Add sentence strips and short stories featuring each phonogram. 9. Progress to word lists where the child must decide which phonogram fits.

Educator tip

Move through the phonograms steadily. Keep one folder live at a time; collect mastered words into a personal dictionary to honor the child's progress.

Assessment

Observe whether the child recognizes new words featuring a studied phonogram and whether they apply the pattern in their writing.
