Blue Series — Phonogram Words
The Blue Series extends the child's reading into words with blended consonants, keeping the phonetic principle intact. A mismatched card or mispronounced word is perceived by the child upon rereading, and the object or picture confirms or contradicts the decoded word.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Language
- Learning area: Reading
- Level: Ages 5-6
Objectives
- Read phonetic words with consonant blends (stop, frog, hand)
- Extend decoding to more complex word structures
- Build reading fluency
- Prepare for phonograms in the Green Series
Materials
- Blue Series Object/Picture/Word boxes with phonetic words containing consonant blends
- Small mat
- Optional small notebook for transcribing words
Instructions
1. Proceed as with the Pink Series: objects or pictures in a row. 2. Present word cards one at a time. 3. Sound each letter distinctly. 4. Blend the sounds smoothly into the whole word. 5. Match each word card beneath its correct object or picture. 6. Verify each pairing together. 7. Repeat until all boxes are mastered. 8. Introduce word lists without supporting images. 9. Extend to simple sentences using Blue Series words.
Educator tip
Sound the blend as two sounds, not as a digraph. The child will discover the blending naturally with practice — don't pre-chunk it for them.
Assessment
Note fluency, consistency, and willingness to read independently without adult support.
