- Unit: EYFS Physical Development
- Learning area: Physical Development
- Level: EYFS Birth-2
Objectives
- Posts objects through holes
- Uses controlled release
- Rotates objects to fit
- Shows developing hand-eye coordination
Materials
- Shape sorter
- Posting box with various-sized holes
- Objects to post: balls, blocks, pompoms
- Homemade posting containers
Instructions
STARTING SIMPLE: Begin with a large hole and a ball — easy to post. Gradually introduce smaller holes and objects that need rotating to fit.
DEMONSTRATING: Show how to post: 'Watch — I put the ball near the hole and... drop! It went in!' Let the child hear the satisfying plop.
ENCOURAGING PERSISTENCE: If an object won't fit, guide: 'Try turning it. Does it fit now?' Don't do it for them — let them problem-solve.
VARYING CHALLENGE: Move from simple posting to shape sorting as skills develop. Homemade posting boxes with kitchen roll tubes are great.
