Clay Modelling and Sculpting
To develop hand strength, finger precision, and three-dimensional thinking through clay work.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Physical Development
- Learning area: Physical Development
- Level: EYFS Reception
Objectives
- Moulds clay into recognisable forms
- Uses clay tools with control
- Shows hand strength for sustained kneading
- Adds detail to models
Materials
- Air-dry clay
- Clay tools (modelling tools, wire cutters)
- Water for smoothing
- Rolling pins
- Work boards
Instructions
TEACHING TECHNIQUES: Show pinching, rolling, coiling, and slab building. 'Roll a ball, then pinch it to make a pot!' 'Roll a long sausage and coil it round!'
DEVELOPING HAND STRENGTH: Clay requires more strength than playdough. Regular clay work builds the hand muscles needed for sustained writing.
ENCOURAGING DETAIL: 'Can you add eyes to your animal? Use a pointed tool to draw the mouth!' Fine details develop precision.
FIRING OR DRYING: Air-dry clay can be painted when dry. 'Your sculpture will harden overnight, then you can paint it!'
