ASSESSING READINESS: 'Can you glide on your balance bike with feet up for 5 seconds? Then you're ready for pedals!'
LOWERING THE SADDLE: The child should be able to put both feet flat on the ground while seated. Confidence comes from knowing they can stop.
RUNNING ALONGSIDE: Hold the back of the saddle lightly. Gradually reduce support. 'I'm letting go... you're doing it!'
TEACHING PEDAL START: 'Put one foot on the pedal (at the top). Push down and start pedalling!' The hardest part is getting started from stationary.
