Button, Zip, and Buckle Practice
To develop independence in dressing through mastering complex fastenings.

- Real clothing with various fastenings
- Dolls with clothes
- Timer for speed challenge (optional)
Instructions
TEACHING BUTTONS: 'Push the button through the hole from the back. Pull it through from the front.' Start with large buttons and progress to small.
PRACTISING ZIPS: 'Hold the bottom of the zip with one hand. Pull the zip up with the other.' The tricky part is inserting the zip — practise this specifically.
INTRODUCING BUCKLES: 'Push the prong through the hole. Now tuck the strap through the loop.' Belt buckles are challenging but achievable.
BUILDING INDEPENDENCE: By the end of Reception, children should dress and undress independently for PE. Practise the full sequence regularly.
