CREATING INTIMACY: Lap time is about the relationship, not the book. Hold the baby close, let them feel your warmth. Read at their pace—if they want to linger on a page, linger.

FOLLOWING INTEREST: Babies may want to chew the book, turn pages randomly, or look at one picture repeatedly. Follow their lead: 'You love that picture of the cat! Let's look again!'

READING EMOTIONS: Choose books with clear facial expressions. Point and name: 'Look, the baby is crying. She's sad. Oh—now she's smiling! She's happy again!'

MAKING IT ROUTINE: Regular one-to-one reading builds anticipation and security. 'It's our story time! Shall we choose a book?' This becomes a cherished part of the day.
