Instructions
MAKING IT RELATIONAL: Never change a nappy in silence. This is prime one-to-one time. Maintain eye contact, chat, sing: 'Let's get you clean and comfy! Shall we sing our changing song?'
INVOLVING THE BABY: Even young babies can participate: 'Can you lift your bottom? Thank you! Now let's put your clean nappy on.' This builds body awareness and cooperation.
SINGING CONSISTENTLY: Have a special nappy-changing song. Consistency makes the routine predictable and something to look forward to. 'Here we go again—our nappy song!'
NARRATING STEPS: Tell the baby what you're doing: 'I'm going to wipe your bottom now—the wipe might feel a bit cold! There we go. All clean!' Narration respects their body and builds trust.
