Making and matching sounds helps toddlers understand vocal range and develop memory.

Objectives

• Create sounds with voice or tools
• Match sounds to animals or objects
• Demonstrate control over volume

Materials

• Instruments (drum, shaker)
• Animal sound cards
• Voice prompts

Instructions

Ask, 'Can you sound like a dog?' Use cards and instruments to match or copy sounds.

Educator tip

Let children take turns being the 'sound leader.'

Assessment

Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Evaluate participation and sound recognition.
