Creating noise with materials builds understanding of cause and effect and enhances auditory awareness.

Objectives

• Shake and tap instruments
• Recognise sound from cause
• Respond with excitement or imitation

Materials

• Plastic containers (empty)
• Rice or beans
• Wooden spoons

Instructions

Help children shake, tap, and bang items to make sounds. Compare loud vs. soft and fast vs. slow.

Educator tip

Say, 'You made a big sound!' to affirm and encourage language.

Assessment

Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Observe reaction to sound and ability to repeat actions.
