To develop transport vocabulary and movement language through small world vehicle play.

Materials
- Road mat or large paper with drawn roads
- Collection of vehicles (car, bus, ambulance, fire engine, bicycle, train)
- Play people figures
- Traffic lights and road signs
Instructions
Name vehicles as children select them: 'You've got the fire engine! Nee-naw nee-naw! Where is the fire engine going? Is there an emergency?' Extend imaginative play.
Model movement language: 'The car is going fast along the road! Now it's stopping at the traffic lights. Red means stop! The light changes to green—off we go!'
Introduce prepositions: 'The bus is going over the bridge. The train is going through the tunnel. The bicycle is next to the car.'
Create mini-scenarios: 'Oh no, the ambulance needs to get to the hospital fast! Can the other cars move out of the way? How do they know to move? The siren!'
