Rhyme Time Basket
To develop awareness of rhyme and rhythm through playful exploration of rhyming objects.

Objectives

Materials
- Basket with rhyming object pairs
- Rhyming picture cards
- Cosy rug for group gathering
Instructions
Pull objects from the basket one at a time, saying the name clearly and slowly. 'Cat! I have a cat. Now what else sounds like cat? Hat! Cat—hat! They rhyme!'
Clap the rhythm as you say rhyming pairs. Encourage children to clap along: 'Cat-hat, cat-hat!'
Let children pick objects and see if they can find the matching rhyming partner. Accept near-misses warmly.
Sing simple rhyming songs to reinforce the concept: 'Twinkle twinkle little star' and pause for children to supply the rhyming word.
