Instructions
Start where children are—some can follow two-step instructions whilst others manage four or five. Know your children and differentiate accordingly. 'Put on your coat and then come to the carpet' might be perfect for one child whilst another is ready for more.
Make instructions meaningful: 'Put the red pencils in the pot, then put the pot on the shelf, then sit on the carpet' makes more sense than random commands because it achieves something real. Purpose aids memory.
Speak clearly and at a measured pace. Give all the instructions before children start rather than feeding them one at a time. 'Listen carefully—I'll say it all first, then you can do it.' This trains memory and planning.
Play games that require following instructions: 'Simon Says' builds listening. 'Treasure hunts' with multi-step clues challenge memory. 'Cooking' requires precise sequence-following. Games make practice fun.
Teach strategies: 'When I give you instructions, try making a picture in your head. First you'll... then you'll... Can you see it?' Help children develop their own memory techniques.
When children forget, don't simply repeat. Ask: 'What was the first thing you needed to do? And after that?' Help them reconstruct rather than creating dependence on repetition.
Increase complexity gradually. Add steps, add detail, add conditional instructions: 'If you're wearing blue, touch your nose. If you're wearing red, touch your ears.' Make it a welcome challenge rather than a test.
Connect to real life: 'When I give you instructions for how to get changed for PE, you need to remember all the steps. Let's practise listening carefully.' Show the skill matters beyond games.
