Instructions
Define stereotypes as assumptions about groups that ignore individual differences. Identify stereotypes in books, media, and conversation. Discuss the harm: stereotypes limit people, hurt feelings, and lead to unfair treatment. Practise countering stereotypes with individualized thinking: 'Even if that's sometimes true of some people, this person is an individual!'
Educator tip
Be careful not to reinforce stereotypes while teaching about them—focus quickly on countering.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observe stereotype identification, understanding of harm, and counter-stereotype thinking.
