- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Champions of Character
- Learning area: Socio-Emotional
- Level: EYFS Reception
Objectives
- Understand that people have different advantages
- Recognise their own privileges
- Use privilege to help others
Materials
- Privilege walk activity (modified)
- Discussion materials
- Action planning
Instructions
Introduce the concept that not everyone starts with the same advantages—through no fault of their own. Use age-appropriate examples: some kids have more books at home, some have parents who can help with homework, some have easier access to healthy food. Discuss how privilege can be used to help others rather than to judge. Plan actions: sharing advantages, advocating for fairness, not assuming everyone has the same opportunities.
Educator tip
This topic requires sensitivity. Focus on action and empathy rather than guilt.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observe understanding of privilege concept, empathy development, and commitment to fairness actions.
