Instructions
Identify how conflicts escalate: voices get louder, bodies tense, words become meaner. Teach de-escalation techniques: lowering your voice, stepping back, taking breaths, changing the subject, suggesting a break. Practise applying de-escalation in heated scenarios. Learn to help de-escalate conflicts between others: 'This seems heated. Should we take a break?'
Educator tip
De-escalation doesn't mean backing down—it means reducing heat so the actual problem can be solved.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observe escalation recognition, de-escalation technique use, and effectiveness in real situations.
