Personal Values Exploration

Articulating personal values provides an internal compass for decision-making.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

Explore what values are: beliefs about what's important and how to live. Use values card sorting to identify personal top values. Connect values to daily decisions: 'If honesty is my value, how does that affect my choices?' Write personal values statements explaining top values and their importance. Display or keep values statements as personal references.

Educator tip

Help children distinguish between things they value (toys, games) and core values (fairness, kindness, family).

Assessment

Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observe values identification, connection to decisions, and quality of written statements.
