United States Mapping & Flag

Toddlers develop global awareness through movement, repetition, and play. 'United States Mapping & Flag' supports language growth and curiosity.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Large, simplified map of the United States printed on heavy cardstock

- Red, white, and blue finger paints or washable ink pads

- Small American flag on a sturdy wooden base

- Pre-cut star shapes made from silver cardstock

- Glue sticks or non-toxic liquid glue

- Tray for sensory exploration

Learning Objectives

- Recognise the visual difference between the colours red, white, and blue.

- Engage in sensory exploration through tactile painting or gluing.

- Develop fine motor skills by placing stars on the map.

- Demonstrate awareness of a new object through visual tracking of the flag.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather toddlers in a small circle on the floor to introduce the American flag.

2. Hold the flag at eye level and allow the children to touch the fabric and observe the movement of the stripes.

3. Place the large map on a low table or the floor, ensuring it is secured with tape so it does not slide.

4. Explain that the map represents the United States, keeping the language simple and repetitive.

5. Provide the red, white, and blue paint on a tray and encourage children to use their fingers to make marks on the map.

6. Assist children in applying glue to the back of the silver stars.

7. Guide their hands to press the stars onto the map, helping them feel the texture of the paper and the adhesive.

8. Allow the artwork to dry in a designated area where the children can see their work displayed.

9. Conclude the activity by singing a simple song about colours while pointing to the flag again.

Educator Tip

Toddlers have short attention spans, so keep the direct instruction to under three minutes. If a child shows frustration with the glue or paint, focus on the sensory experience of touching the flag rather than completing the map. This ensures the activity remains positive and stress-free.

Assessment

- Observe if the child can point to or identify the colours red, white, or blue when prompted.

- Record whether the child engages with the tactile materials for at least five minutes.

- Note if the child demonstrates interest by looking at or reaching for the flag during the introduction.

Assessment

Observe and note: emerging independence, two-word combinations, imitation of actions, and early pretend play. Use Development Matters non-statutory guidance checkpoints. Participation, imitation, early vocabulary attempts.
