Instructions
Materials
- Large outline map of the United States printed on heavy cardstock.
- Red, white, and blue sugar paper strips.
- Child-safe glue sticks and safety scissors.
- Pre-cut star shapes made from white cardstock.
- A physical globe or a large wall map of the world.
- A small United States flag for visual reference.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the United States as a specific country on a map or globe.
- Recognise the colours red, white, and blue as symbols of the national flag.
- Practise fine motor skills by tearing or cutting paper and applying glue.
- Follow multi-step directions to complete a simple craft project.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather students in a circle and show them the globe. Point to the United States and explain that this is where we are learning about today.
2. Display the physical flag and ask students to name the colours they see.
3. Distribute the cardstock map outlines to each child at their workspace.
4. Demonstrate how to tear or cut the coloured paper into small pieces.
5. Model how to apply glue to the map and press the coloured paper pieces onto the surface to create a mosaic effect.
6. Assist children in placing the white stars onto the blue section of their map.
7. Encourage students to talk about the colours they are using as they work.
8. Allow time for the glue to dry before displaying the maps on a classroom wall or bulletin board.
Educator Tip
If students struggle with the concept of a map, focus on the flag as a primary symbol. You can simplify the task by providing pre-cut shapes if children are not yet comfortable using scissors. This keeps the focus on colour recognition and spatial placement rather than complex cutting skills.
Assessment
- Observe if the child can point to the United States when prompted.
- Note the child's ability to identify and name the colours red, white, and blue.
- Record the child's engagement and ability to follow the sequence of gluing and placing stars.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Checklist: participation, correct identification, completion of task.
