American Flag Shapes

Level 3 promotes critical thinking and structured analysis. 'American Flag Shapes' strengthens global literacy and respectful cultural awareness.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Rectangular sheets of white cardstock

- Pre-cut red paper strips of varying lengths

- Blue sugar paper squares

- Small white star stickers

- Glue sticks and child-safe scissors

- Printed reference images of the American flag

Learning Objectives

- Identify and name geometric shapes including rectangles, squares, and stars.

- Practise one-to-one correspondence by counting fifty stars and thirteen stripes.

- Demonstrate spatial awareness by arranging components to match a visual model.

- Refine fine motor skills through precise cutting and sticker placement.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather students in a circle and display a large image of the American flag.

2. Lead a discussion on the shapes found within the flag, specifically identifying the rectangular stripes and the square blue field.

3. Distribute the cardstock bases and explain that students will build their own flag using these specific shapes.

4. Instruct students to count out thirteen red strips and glue them horizontally onto the white cardstock to create the stripes.

5. Have students glue the blue square in the top left corner of their flag.

6. Provide each student with a sheet of star stickers and ask them to count out fifty stars to place within the blue square.

7. Circulate the room to assist students with the alignment of the stripes and the spacing of the stars.

8. Encourage students to count their stripes and stars aloud as they work to reinforce numeracy skills.

9. Allow time for the glue to dry before displaying the finished flags on the classroom wall.

Educator Tip

If students struggle with the large quantity of fifty stars, encourage them to group the stickers into sets of five or ten to practise skip counting. This helps manage the task while reinforcing higher-level mathematical concepts.

Assessment

- Observe if the child correctly identifies the difference between a square and a rectangle during the assembly process.

- Verify the child can accurately count the thirteen stripes and fifty stars independently.

- Note the child's ability to follow the spatial instructions for placing the blue square in the top left corner.

Assessment

Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Rubric: reasoning, accuracy, clarity, independence.
