American Flag Shapes
Toddlers develop global awareness through movement, repetition, and play. 'American Flag Shapes' supports language growth and curiosity.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Around the World
- Learning area: Numeracy
- Level: EYFS 2-3
Objectives
- Label countries or symbols
- Imitate movements
- Match colours/shapes
- Follow 1-step directions
Instructions
Materials
- Pre-cut blue felt rectangles
- Red felt strips
- White paper stars
- Glue sticks or non-toxic liquid glue
- Large cardstock sheets
- Trays for organising materials
Learning Objectives
- Identify the rectangle shape through tactile exploration.
- Practise one-to-one correspondence by counting stars.
- Develop fine motor skills by placing shapes onto the cardstock.
- Recognise the colours red, white, and blue.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prepare a workstation by placing a sheet of cardstock and a tray of materials in front of each toddler.
2. Hold up a blue rectangle and name the shape clearly for the children.
3. Demonstrate how to apply glue to the back of the blue rectangle and press it onto the top corner of the cardstock.
4. Encourage the children to pick up a red strip and place it horizontally on the paper to represent a stripe.
5. Provide the white stars one by one, counting aloud as each child places a star onto the blue rectangle.
6. Use simple language to describe the actions, such as "glue the shape" or "press the star."
7. Allow children to explore the texture of the felt and paper freely, focusing on the process rather than a perfect final product.
8. Assist children with glue application if they struggle, keeping the focus on the sensory experience of the materials.
9. Display the finished flags at the children's eye level to encourage pride in their work.
Educator Tip
Toddlers often explore materials through touch rather than structured placement. If a child prefers to stack the shapes rather than arrange them, validate their curiosity by naming the shapes they are holding. This maintains engagement without forcing a rigid outcome.
Assessment
- Observe if the child can distinguish between the rectangle and the star shapes.
- Note if the child attempts to count along with the teacher when placing stars.
- Record the child's ability to use a glue stick with increasing independence.
Assessment
Observe and note: emerging independence, two-word combinations, imitation of actions, and early pretend play. Use Development Matters non-statutory guidance checkpoints. Participation, imitation, early vocabulary attempts.
