American Flag Shapes
Level 1 builds foundational geography and cultural awareness. 'American Flag Shapes' reinforces identity and belonging.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Around the World
- Learning area: Numeracy
- Level: EYFS 3-4
Objectives
- Identify country on map
- Follow 2–3 steps
- Recognise flag/colours
- Participate in discussion
Instructions
Materials
- Pre-cut red and white sugar paper rectangles
- Blue sugar paper squares
- Small white star stickers
- Glue sticks
- Large sheets of white cardstock
- Trays for organising materials
Learning Objectives
- Identify and name the rectangle and square shapes.
- Count the number of stripes and stars on their flag.
- Demonstrate fine motor control by peeling stickers and applying glue.
- Follow a multi-step sequence to assemble a recognizable pattern.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather students in a circle and show a picture of the American flag. Ask them to point out the shapes they see, such as the long rectangles for stripes and the square for the blue field.
2. Distribute a piece of cardstock and a tray of pre-cut paper shapes to each child.
3. Model the process by gluing the long red and white rectangles horizontally onto the cardstock to form the stripes.
4. Encourage children to count the stripes as they glue them down to reinforce one-to-one correspondence.
5. Assist children in gluing the blue square in the top left corner of their flag.
6. Provide the white star stickers and ask students to count five stars as they peel and place them onto the blue square.
7. Circulate the room to offer support with glue application and sticker placement.
8. Allow the flags to dry on a flat surface before displaying them in the classroom.
Educator Tip
If a child struggles with the concept of patterns, focus on the shape recognition rather than the exact number of stripes. You can extend this activity for advanced learners by asking them to create a flag for a fictional country using different geometric shapes like triangles or circles.
Assessment
- Observe if the child correctly identifies the difference between the rectangle and square shapes.
- Record the child's ability to count to five while placing the star stickers.
- Note the child's level of independence in following the assembly sequence.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Checklist: participation, correct identification, completion of task.
