- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Around the World
- Learning area: Geography
- Level: EYFS Reception
Objectives
- Analyse similarities/differences among countries
- Justify thinking
- Extend with writing, mapping, or data graph
Instructions
Materials
- Large paper map of the United States featuring state outlines.
- Pre-cut star shapes and red and white paper strips.
- Glue sticks and child-safe scissors.
- Laminated fact cards showing the United States flag and landmarks.
- Crayons or markers.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the United States on a world globe or map.
- Recognise the red, white, and blue colour scheme and the star pattern of the flag.
- Develop fine motor skills through cutting and precise gluing.
- Demonstrate spatial awareness by placing map elements in correct locations.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather the children in a circle and display the world map. Point to the United States and invite children to share what they know about the country.
2. Show the children the United States flag. Discuss the meaning of the colours and the stars.
3. Distribute the red and white paper strips to each child.
4. Instruct the children to glue the strips onto a rectangular piece of paper to recreate the flag pattern.
5. Provide the pre-cut stars and have the children glue them onto the blue section of their flag.
6. Hand out the large paper maps of the United States.
7. Ask children to colour the map and identify one major landmark or state they find interesting.
8. Assist children in labelling their map with the name of the country.
9. Allow time for children to share their completed flags and maps with a partner.
10. Display the finished work on the classroom wall to create a collective map gallery.
Educator Tip
To differentiate for children who struggle with fine motor tasks, provide pre-cut flag templates where they only need to arrange the pieces. For advanced learners, encourage them to draw a specific state or a famous monument on their map to demonstrate deeper geographical knowledge.
Assessment
- Observe if the child can correctly identify the United States flag from a selection of other country flags.
- Note the child's ability to follow multi-step directions during the construction phase.
- Evaluate the child's verbal explanation of the flag components during the sharing portion of the lesson.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Rubric: reasoning, accuracy, clarity, independence.
