Instructions
Materials
- Large paper map of the United States.
- Pre-cut red, white, and blue sugar paper strips.
- Glue sticks and child-safe scissors.
- Printed templates of the United States flag.
- A globe or world map for reference.
- Star stickers.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the United States on a world map or globe.
- Recognise the colours and basic pattern of the United States flag.
- Practise fine motor skills through cutting and pasting.
- Demonstrate spatial awareness by placing stars in the blue corner of the flag.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather the children in a circle and show them the globe. Point to the United States and explain that this is where we are learning about today.
2. Display the United States flag. Ask the children to count the colours they see and describe the shapes, such as stripes and stars.
3. Distribute the flag templates and the pre-cut paper strips to each child.
4. Demonstrate how to apply glue to the template and place the red and white strips horizontally to create the stripes.
5. Guide the children to cut small squares or shapes if they are ready, or use the pre-cut pieces to complete the pattern.
6. Provide the blue square for the corner of the flag and assist children in gluing it into the correct position.
7. Encourage children to place star stickers onto the blue square to represent the states.
8. Have each child bring their finished flag to the large map on the wall.
9. Help them tape their flag onto the map over the United States to connect the symbol to the location.
10. Conclude the activity by reviewing the name of the country together.
Educator Tip
To differentiate for children who need more support, provide a template with the stripes already outlined in colour. For children who are ready for a challenge, ask them to count the stripes as they glue them to see if they can match the number on the actual flag.
Assessment
- Observe if the child can correctly identify the United States on the map when prompted.
- Note the child's ability to follow a sequence of steps to complete the flag craft.
- Record whether the child can independently place the blue square in the top left corner of the flag.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observe explanation quality, cooperation, accuracy.
