- A clear, open space in the classroom or outdoor play area.
- Adhesive tape for securing cards.
- A small basket for collecting items.
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate the ability to count sequentially from one to ten in Spanish.
- Practise gross motor skills through walking, reaching, and bending.
- Identify and match numerical symbols to physical quantities.
- Follow multi-step directions within a group setting.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather the children in a circle and review the Spanish numbers one through ten using the flashcards.
2. Ask the children to repeat the numbers aloud as you point to each card.
3. Explain that you have hidden ten numbered cards around the room and ten matching animal figurines.
4. Demonstrate the task by finding one card and one animal, then placing them together in the basket.
5. Instruct the children to move around the room to locate the hidden items.
6. Encourage them to say the Spanish number aloud whenever they find a card.
7. Once all items are collected, have the group sit together to verify the matches.
8. Lead the children in counting the collected animals in Spanish as you place them in numerical order.
9. Celebrate the successful completion of the search by clapping or performing a short movement sequence for each number.
Educator Tip
If children struggle with the sequence, focus on one through five first before introducing the full set. You can also increase the challenge by asking children to perform a specific movement, such as jumping or hopping, the same number of times as the card they discover.
Assessment
- Observe if the child can correctly identify the Spanish word for the number on the card they find.
- Note whether the child can successfully match the numeral to the correct quantity of objects.
- Record if the child participates in the group counting sequence without significant prompting.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observe explanation quality, cooperation, accuracy.
