India Mapping & Flag

Toddlers develop global awareness through movement, repetition, and play. 'India Mapping & Flag' supports language growth and curiosity.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Large printed map of India with bold, simple outlines.

- Pre-cut flag shapes featuring orange, white, and green sugar paper.

- Non-toxic glue sticks or washable glue dots.

- A small bowl of saffron, white, and green sensory materials like dyed rice or felt scraps.

- A globe or world map for visual reference.

Learning Objectives

- Recognise the visual representation of a flag as a symbol of a place.

- Develop fine motor skills through grasping and placing paper shapes.

- Explore colour identification through the three colours of the Indian flag.

- Engage in sensory exploration of different textures and materials.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather the children in a circle and show them the globe. Point to India and say the name clearly while touching the area.

2. Present the pre-cut flag shapes to the children. Name the colours orange, white, and green as you hold each piece up.

3. Allow the children to touch the sensory materials like the dyed rice or felt to build a tactile connection to the colours.

4. Place the large map outline on a low table or the floor where children can reach it easily.

5. Model the activity by placing a piece of orange paper on the flag template. Use simple language such as orange goes here.

6. Encourage the children to pick up their own pieces and place them onto the template with your assistance.

7. Provide gentle physical guidance for children who are still developing their pincer grasp.

8. Celebrate the completion of the flag by clapping and repeating the name of the country.

9. Display the finished flags at the children's eye level to reinforce the visual memory of the lesson.

Educator Tip

Keep this activity brief, as toddlers have short attention spans. If a child loses interest in the gluing process, focus on the sensory aspect by letting them scoop and pour the coloured rice instead.

Assessment

- Observe if the child attempts to place the paper pieces within the designated area.

- Note if the child responds to the name of the country when spoken aloud.

- Record whether the child can identify or point to one of the three flag colours.

Assessment

Observe and note: emerging independence, two-word combinations, imitation of actions, and early pretend play. Use Development Matters non-statutory guidance checkpoints. Participation, imitation, early vocabulary attempts.
