Instructions
Materials
- Large printed outline map of India on cardstock
- Pre-cut strips of orange, white, and green sugar paper
- Glue sticks and child-safe liquid glue
- Small blue circular stickers or pre-cut blue paper circles
- A globe or world map for reference
- Laminated flag of India for visual display
Learning Objectives
- Identify the flag of India by its three distinct colours.
- Develop fine motor control through tearing and gluing paper.
- Recognise that India is a specific place located on a world map.
- Practise following multi-step directions in a small group setting.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather the children in a circle and display the globe. Point to India and explain that it is a large country far away.
2. Show the laminated flag of India. Ask the children to name the colours they see.
3. Distribute the cardstock maps to each child. Place the glue and paper strips in the centre of the table.
4. Model how to tear the coloured paper into smaller pieces. Explain that these will become the colours of the Indian flag.
5. Instruct the children to glue the orange pieces at the top of their map, the white pieces in the middle, and the green pieces at the bottom.
6. Assist children in placing the blue circle in the centre of the white section to represent the wheel of the flag.
7. Encourage children to talk about their work as they glue, reinforcing the names of the colours.
8. Allow the maps to dry on a flat surface before hanging them in the classroom gallery.
Educator Tip
If children struggle with the concept of the flag, focus on the sensory experience of the colours rather than the geography. You can extend this activity for advanced learners by asking them to count how many pieces of paper they used for each colour section.
Assessment
- Observe if the child can correctly identify the three colours of the Indian flag.
- Note the child's ability to manipulate small pieces of paper using a pincer grasp.
- Confirm the child can point to the map of India when asked to locate the country.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Checklist: participation, correct identification, completion of task.
