France Mapping & Eiffel Tower Build

Infants build neural foundations through sensory pairing and repetition. 'France Mapping & Eiffel Tower Build' introduces global diversity in developmentally appropriate way.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Large map of the world printed on a wipeable floor mat.

- Soft, lightweight foam blocks or large cardboard bricks.

- High-contrast photos of the Eiffel Tower.

- Soft fabric scarves in blue, white, and red.

- A small mirror for sensory exploration.

Learning Objectives

- Demonstrate visual tracking by following the teacher's movement toward the map.

- Respond to sensory input through tactile engagement with different textures.

- Exhibit social engagement by mirroring the teacher's facial expressions during play.

- Develop fine motor skills by grasping and releasing soft building blocks.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Lay the world map mat on the floor in a quiet, carpeted area.

2. Place the infant on their back or tummy in the centre of the map.

3. Show the infant the high-contrast photo of the Eiffel Tower and describe it using a calm, melodic voice.

4. Gently wave the red, white, and blue scarves near the infant to introduce the colours of the French flag.

5. Begin stacking three or four foam blocks near the infant to represent the Eiffel Tower.

6. Narrate the building process, using simple words like up, tall, and build.

7. Allow the infant to reach out and touch the blocks or knock them over to explore cause and effect.

8. Hold the mirror near the blocks so the infant can see their own reflection alongside the tower.

9. Encourage the infant to grasp a block and offer gentle guidance if they show interest in stacking.

10. Conclude the activity by singing a simple song about travel or landmarks while rocking the infant.

Educator Tip

Infants have very short attention spans, so keep the interaction brief and focused on sensory engagement rather than the final structure. If an infant becomes overstimulated, remove the visual aids and focus on soft vocalizations and gentle touch to maintain a calm environment.

Assessment

- Note if the infant tracks the movement of the blocks or the teacher's hand.

- Record whether the infant reaches for the textures of the scarves or blocks.

- Observe if the infant shows signs of enjoyment, such as smiling or vocalizing, when the tower is built or knocked down.

Assessment

Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observe gaze tracking, reaching, emotional regulation.
