Trinomial Cube at Algebraic Level — (a+b+c)³

The child built the Trinomial Cube at age three as pure form. Now at eight, the same material reveals its algebra. The cube is the control — the only way pieces fit is the way the identity demands. Indirect aim: symbolic algebra, polynomial expansion, the truth that algebra is geometry.

Instructions

1. Rebuild the Trinomial Cube; lay each piece type in a row on the mat. 2. Label: the red cube = a³, the blue cube = b³, the yellow cube = c³. 3. Label the three prisms that appear thrice each (a²b, a²c, etc.) — note there are three of each. 4. Label the six prisms abc — there are six. 5. Write: (a+b+c)³ = a³ + b³ + c³ + 3a²b + 3a²c + 3ab² + 3b²c + 3ac² + 3bc² + 6abc. 6. Substitute a=1, b=2, c=3; compute the sum = 216. 7. Verify: (1+2+3)³ = 6³ = 216. 8. Reference the control chart and file in the journal.

Educator tip

The child who sees (a+b+c)³ in wood never forgets it. This is one of the most elegant bridges in elementary Montessori — honor the moment.

Assessment

Observe correct matching of wood to symbol, correct expansion, and correct arithmetic verification.
