Binomial Square at Algebraic Level — (a+b)²
Simpler than the cube, the Binomial Square is a gentle first algebra. The square pieces only form the (a+b)² layout one way. Indirect aim: preparation for the cube, foundation for completing the square in later algebra.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Algebraic Sensorial
- Level: Ages 7-8
Objectives
- Lay out the Binomial Square with labels a, b
- Identify a², 2ab, b²
- Write (a+b)² = a² + 2ab + b²
- Verify numerically
Materials
- Binomial Square material (red a², yellow ab x2, blue b²)
- Letter cards
- Symbol cards
- Control chart
Instructions
1. Lay out the four pieces: one red a² square, two yellow ab rectangles, one blue b² square. 2. Arrange to form a larger square of side (a+b). 3. Label each piece. 4. Write: (a+b)² = a² + 2ab + b². 5. Substitute a=4, b=3; compute 16+24+9 = 49. 6. Verify: (4+3)² = 49. 7. Observe geometric truth of algebra. 8. Move to the Binomial Cube.
Educator tip
The two ab rectangles are the hinge of the identity. Children often miss that there are two — point to both.
Assessment
Observe correct layout, identification of the 2ab pair, and numeric verification.
