Constructive Triangles — Large Blue Triangle Box

Once the child sees that identical triangles build many shapes, geometry becomes generative. The equilateral triangle is the simplest regular polygon — everything else grows from it. Indirect aim: tessellation, rotational symmetry, and preparation for the geometry of crystals and architecture.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Lay the twelve triangles on a mat. 2. Join two to form a rhombus — note it has two lines of symmetry. 3. Join three to form a trapezoid. 4. Join six to form a hexagon; note it rotates in six steps to itself. 5. Join four to form a larger equilateral triangle — four times the area. 6. Combine all twelve into a double-sized hexagon or double-triangle. 7. Reference the control chart. 8. Discuss where congruent triangles appear in the world (bee hives, Escher).

Educator tip

Let the child play freely with the twelve triangles before formal compositions. Many discover the hexagon themselves — let them.

Assessment

Observe compositions formed, recognition of symmetry, and connections drawn to real-world tessellations.
