Binomial Cube at Algebraic Level — (a+b)³
The child built this cube at three; now at seven they see its algebra. The cube is the control — pieces fit only as the identity demands. Indirect aim: polynomial expansion, symbolic algebra, the unity of geometry and algebra.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Algebraic Sensorial
- Level: Ages 7-9
Objectives
- Rebuild the Binomial Cube with labels a, b
- Identify a³, 3a²b, 3ab², b³
- Write (a+b)³ expansion
- Verify by substitution
Materials
- Binomial Cube (primary material)
- Letter cards a, b
- Symbol cards (a³, 3a²b, 3ab², b³)
- Control chart
Instructions
1. Rebuild the Binomial Cube. 2. Label red cube = a³, blue cube = b³. 3. Label the three red-and-black rectangular solids = 3a²b. 4. Label the three blue-and-black = 3ab². 5. Write: (a+b)³ = a³ + 3a²b + 3ab² + b³. 6. Substitute a=2, b=3; compute = 125. 7. Verify: (2+3)³ = 5³ = 125. 8. File in math journal.
Educator tip
The shock of recognition — 'this cube I built at three was algebra?' — is one of Montessori elementary's great moments.
Assessment
Observe correct labeling, expansion writing, and verification by substitution.
