Short Decanomial — Square Tiles Layout
The short decanomial condenses the long one. Each tile is a single product; the child sees the entire multiplication table as art. Indirect aim: memorization of multiplication facts, pattern recognition, preparation for algebraic thinking.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Algebraic Sensorial
- Level: Ages 7-8
Objectives
- Build the 10x10 multiplication table with square tiles
- Identify diagonal squares (1, 4, 9, ... 100)
- Recognize commutative pairs
- Compute the sum of all entries
Materials
- Short Decanomial set (100 square tiles, each labeled n×m)
- Large mat
- Control chart
Instructions
1. Lay tiles in rows: 1x1, 1x2, 1x3... 1x10 across the top. 2. Continue with 2x1, 2x2... 2x10. 3. Build the full 10x10 grid. 4. Identify the diagonal: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100. 5. Note commutative pairs (2x3 = 3x2). 6. Compute row sums and compare. 7. Compute total sum = 3025 = 55². 8. Compare to the long decanomial.
Educator tip
The discovery that the diagonal is all squares is often the child's first aha of pattern in arithmetic. Honor it.
Assessment
Observe grid accuracy, diagonal recognition, commutative pair awareness.
