Constructive Triangles — Third Box (Mixed Polygons)

The elementary mind is ready to see that all polygons are triangle-built. The black guide lines are the control — joined, they form recognizable polygons. Indirect aim: the triangle-count formula (n−2)×180° for interior angles, and preparation for tessellation and geometry charts.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Lay out the Third Box triangles on a mat. 2. Join two along their black edges to form a rhombus. 3. Join another pair to form a rectangle. 4. Continue: trapezoid, parallelogram, larger triangle, hexagon. 5. For each polygon, count how many small triangles it contains. 6. Match nomenclature cards. 7. Conjecture the triangle count for a heptagon, octagon. 8. Reference the control chart.

Educator tip

The discovery that every polygon is made of triangles is the gateway to elementary geometry. Don't hand it over — let the child notice through play.

Assessment

Observe recognition of polygons, accurate counting of triangles within, and the leap to the (n−2) pattern.
