Trinomial Cube — Algebraic Extension

In primary the child built this cube without names. In elementary the pattern is named. Each piece corresponds to a term in (a + b + c)³. Substituting a=2, b=3, c=4 and computing each piece's volume lets the child verify that the pieces sum to 729 = (2+3+4)³. The material is still the control — pieces must still fit.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Build the trinomial cube as in primary. 2. Identify the three solid cubes at corners: a³ (red), b³ (blue), c³ (yellow). 3. Identify the six square-prism pieces along edges: 3a²b, 3a²c, 3ab², 3ac², 3b²c, 3bc². 4. Identify the six rectangular prisms where all three dimensions meet: 6abc. 5. Label each piece with its algebraic term. 6. Substitute numerical values (a=2, b=3, c=4). 7. Compute each term (e.g., 3a²b = 3·4·3 = 36). 8. Sum all terms. 9. Verify the sum equals (a+b+c)³.

Educator tip

Let the child discover which pieces are which by counting dimensions rather than announcing. The satisfaction of numerical verification is the reward.

Assessment

Note correct labeling of every piece and accurate numerical verification.
