Geometric Cabinet — Polygons Drawer

The polygons drawer meets the child's sensitive period for naming — delight in strange, beautiful Greek words (pentagon, octagon). The tracing finger registers each figure; the mismatched fit of a polygon in a wrong frame is the control. Indirect aim: geometry vocabulary and spatial intuition for later classification.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Bring the drawer to a table. 2. Remove three polygons (pentagon, hexagon, heptagon). 3. Trace each frame's inner edge with index and middle finger. 4. Trace each matching polygon's outer edge. 5. Seat each into its frame. 6. Use a three-period lesson: 'This is a pentagon. This is a hexagon. This is a heptagon.' 7. Move to the three-part cards to match solid/thick/thin representations. 8. Over several lessons, introduce octagon, nonagon, decagon. 9. Count the sides of each polygon to reveal the Greek numeral prefix.

Educator tip

Pair with the Constructive Triangles so children see that every polygon can be decomposed into triangles — the heart of geometric reasoning.

Assessment

Observe naming accuracy, tracing precision, and whether children connect side-count to the Greek prefix.
