Power of 2 Cube
The power-of-2 cube isolates the simplest cubic pattern: 2³ = 8. By seeing eight unit cubes assemble into a single larger cube, the child grasps exponentiation before any symbol is introduced. A missing unit reveals itself as a visible gap.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Algebraic Sensorial
- Level: Ages 5-7
Objectives
- Construct a cube from pieces representing 2³
- Discover how the cube decomposes into (1+1)³ = 8 unit cubes
- Prepare for the cube of a binomial
- Build sensorial foundation for exponents
Materials
- Power of 2 cube: eight unit cubes (or two pieces of specific proportions) that assemble into a single 2×2×2 cube
- Felt mat
Instructions
1. Carry the cube pieces to a mat. 2. Disassemble into eight unit cubes. 3. Count them: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. 4. Reassemble: four cubes form the bottom layer (2×2×1), four cubes form the top layer (2×2×1). 5. Place the top layer over the bottom. 6. The result is a 2×2×2 cube. 7. Record: 2 × 2 × 2 = 8 = 2³. 8. Disassemble and reassemble in a different order to confirm. 9. Compare to larger cubes (3³, 5³) from the cubing material.
Educator tip
Make the connection explicit: a cube of side 2 is 2 × 2 × 2 small cubes. The language bridges sensorial to symbolic.
Assessment
Note construction accuracy and whether the child records the formula without prompting.
