Botany Cabinet — Leaf Shapes
The botany cabinet extends geometric form into the living world. A lanceolate leaf is named with the same precision as a pentagon. Children who walk the neighborhood begin seeing leaf shapes everywhere — the work enters daily life. Leaves matched to wrong frames will not sit flush.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Geometric Cabinet
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Name the basic leaf shapes: lanceolate, ovate, reniform, cordate, orbicular, sagittate, hastate, peltate
- Trace each leaf shape with two fingers
- Match leaf insets to real leaves
- Prepare for botany nomenclature
Materials
- Botany Cabinet leaf drawer (eight or more leaf-shape insets with frames)
- Three-part cards of leaf shapes
- A small basket of real leaves for matching (brought from walks)
- Pressed specimens
Instructions
1. Bring the drawer to a table. 2. Remove three leaf-shape insets (lanceolate, ovate, reniform). 3. Trace each frame's inner edge with two fingers. 4. Trace each matching inset's outer edge. 5. Seat into frames. 6. Three-period lesson for the three names. 7. Introduce three-part cards. 8. Gather real leaves from the yard or on a walk and match each to its inset shape. 9. Over lessons, learn all eight or more shapes.
Educator tip
Keep a classroom leaf album; photograph or press each matched leaf with its shape name. The collection builds across seasons.
Assessment
Note naming accuracy, matching of real leaves to insets, and spontaneous identification on walks.
