Knobless Cylinders — Grading by Single Attribute

Though the knobless cylinders are often combined, each set isolates a different variable. Grading the red alone teaches pure height; the yellow alone teaches pure diameter. The green and blue sets reveal how two variables can align or diverge. The gradation break is the visual control of error.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Carry one color set to a rug. 2. Empty the cylinders. 3. Grade from tallest to shortest (red) or widest to narrowest (yellow). 4. Verify the gradation by eye — no broken step. 5. Try grading the green set: tallest-widest down to shortest-narrowest. 6. Try grading the blue set: tallest-narrowest down to shortest-widest (the reversal). 7. Discuss which attribute each set varies. 8. Combine two sets to create nested patterns. 9. Return each set to its case individually.

Educator tip

Name each set's variable explicitly: 'Red changes only in height.' The explicit naming makes the algebra of the material accessible.

Assessment

Note precision of gradation and whether the child articulates which variable each set isolates.
