Constructive Triangles — Blue Rectangular Box

The blue box is the freest of the constructive triangles boxes — no guide lines, no prescribed combinations. The child is a geometer. They discover equivalences, construct every figure the pieces allow, and feel the relationships between triangle types. The shapes themselves — fit or not — are the control.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Carry the box to a mat. 2. Remove all twelve triangles and sort by shape. 3. Pick any two triangles and slide them together along matching edges. 4. Record what figure emerges (kite, rhombus, parallelogram, larger triangle). 5. Continue combining: three triangles, four, all twelve. 6. Discover that different combinations yield the same figure — sensorial equivalence. 7. Name the triangle types: equilateral, isosceles, scalene, right-angled. 8. Note the largest possible figure: a hexagon built from the six pairs. 9. Restore to the box in original arrangement.

Educator tip

The blue box is open-ended — resist prescribing figures. Record the child's discoveries in a class book; compare across children.

Assessment

Observe the variety of figures discovered, discovered equivalences, and accurate triangle-type naming.
