Thermic Tablets
The thermic sense perceives heat transfer — a material that draws heat quickly from the hand feels cool (metal), while a poor conductor feels warm (felt). The child's fingertips become a precise instrument.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Thermic Sense
- Level: Ages 4-5
Objectives
- Distinguish pairs of tablets by temperature conductivity
- Experience how different materials feel warm or cool
- Develop the thermic sense
- Prepare for science observation
Materials
- Set of paired tablets made from different materials: wood, cork, felt, metal, stone, glass
- Blindfold
Instructions
1. Place the tablets on a table at room temperature. 2. Blindfold the child. 3. Place the child's fingertips on one tablet for a moment. 4. Place the same finger on a different tablet. 5. Compare the sensations — 'warmer' or 'cooler.' 6. Match the pairs by temperature feel. 7. Remove the blindfold and verify by material. 8. Grade the set from warmest (felt) to coolest (metal). 9. Introduce material names with a three-period lesson.
Educator tip
The room's ambient temperature affects the impression; avoid cold drafts. Insist on the fingertip, not the palm, for the sharpest discrimination.
Assessment
Note pairing accuracy and consistency blindfolded.
