Mystery Bag (Stereognostic)
The stereognostic sense is the mental image of an object built from touch alone. A child who can 'see' with their hands develops a stronger inner understanding of form. Mismatches between guessed name and revealed object are the control.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Stereognostic Sense
- Level: Ages 4-5
Objectives
- Identify objects by touch alone (stereognostic sense)
- Name objects based on their felt shape and texture
- Integrate tactile, baric, and thermic impressions
- Build the ability to recognize form without sight
Materials
- Cloth bag with drawstring
- Small set of varied objects (key, coin, shell, comb, spoon, pinecone, small toy, button)
Instructions
1. Bring the bag and objects to a mat. 2. Show each object and name it aloud. 3. Place objects in the bag. 4. Draw the drawstring. 5. Reach in without looking and grasp one object. 6. Feel it carefully — shape, edges, texture, weight. 7. Name the object before pulling it out. 8. Pull it out to verify. 9. Continue until all objects are identified, then refill and repeat.
Educator tip
Start with 4-5 very different objects, then progress to pairs of similar shapes (two keys, two coins) for finer discrimination.
Assessment
Note the child's strategy for exploration, naming accuracy, and readiness for the paired mystery bag.
