Smelling Jars
The olfactory sense is rarely cultivated but deeply connected to memory and emotion. Scent jars isolate smell from all other senses. Mismatched pairs smell wrong to the child.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Olfactory Sense
- Level: Ages 4-5
Objectives
- Match pairs of jars by their scent
- Acquire vocabulary for common scents (cinnamon, lemon, lavender)
- Refine the olfactory sense
- Connect scents to real-world sources
Materials
- Two sets of identical jars with pierced or cotton-filled lids, each containing a scent (cinnamon, vanilla, coffee, lemon zest, peppermint, lavender)
Instructions
1. Place the two sets of jars on a table, one set in a column. 2. Open one jar and hold it at nose height, a hand's width away. 3. Sniff gently — not deeply — and note the scent. 4. Close the jar. 5. Open jars from the second set until the matching scent is found. 6. Pair them side by side. 7. Continue until all pairs are matched. 8. Verify with the teacher. 9. Introduce scent names with a three-period lesson.
Educator tip
Refresh the scents regularly; they fade. Work in a well-ventilated area between sniffs. Avoid overwhelming scents in one session.
Assessment
Note pairing accuracy, vocabulary retention, and whether the child identifies scents outside the jars.
