The Power of Two Cube — 2³
The reasoning mind takes exponents in stride when they are first held in the hands. The cube is the control — it cannot be built any other way with eight units. Indirect aim: preparation for exponent notation, volume, and the power of 2 as a mathematical and computational foundation.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Algebraic Sensorial
- Level: Ages 8-10
Objectives
- Build the 2³ cube using eight 1-unit cubes
- Express volume as 2 × 2 × 2 = 8
- Decompose the cube layer by layer to see the square base
- Compare 2¹, 2², 2³ visibly
Materials
- Eight 1-unit wooden cubes
- 2² square (four unit squares) and 2¹ bar (two unit cubes)
- Power of Two chart (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512)
Instructions
1. Lay 2¹ — two cubes in a row. 2. Build 2² — a 2-by-2 square on top of or beside the row. 3. Stack another 2² on top to form 2³ — a 2-by-2-by-2 cube. 4. Count: 8 unit cubes. 5. Decompose layer by layer: two squares of 4 stacked = 8. 6. Continue the pattern on paper: 2⁴ = 16, 2⁵ = 32, using the chart. 7. Discuss: where does the power of 2 appear in the world? (computers, cell division). 8. Record observations in the math journal.
Educator tip
The power of 2 is the most-used exponent in the modern world. Tie it to computers — children love that their screens count in powers of two.
Assessment
Observe accurate construction, correct naming of 2¹, 2², 2³, and extension to 2⁴ and beyond on paper.
