The Power of Three Cube — 3³
The child who built 2³ is ready for 3³. Three times more in each dimension yields twenty-seven — a surprise that arithmetic alone doesn't fully deliver. Indirect aim: volume formula, cube roots, the non-linear growth of cubic functions.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Algebraic Sensorial
- Level: Ages 8-10
Objectives
- Build the 3³ cube using twenty-seven 1-unit cubes
- Express volume as 3 × 3 × 3 = 27
- Decompose into three 3×3 layers
- Extend the pattern: 4³ = 64
Materials
- Twenty-seven 1-unit wooden cubes
- 3² square (nine unit squares)
- Power of Three chart (1, 3, 9, 27, 81, 243)
- Recording paper
Instructions
1. Build the base: a 3×3 square of nine unit cubes. 2. Build the middle layer: another 3×3 square placed on top. 3. Build the top layer: a third 3×3 square. 4. Count: 27 unit cubes in total. 5. Compute: 3 × 3 × 3 = 3 × 9 = 27. 6. Compare to 2³ = 8 — note how quickly the cube grows. 7. Predict 4³ by building with the short cubing chain or computing. 8. Record 1³, 2³, 3³, 4³, 5³ in the math journal.
Educator tip
The leap from 8 to 27 to 64 is where cubic growth becomes felt, not just computed. Let children physically build a few cubes before moving to chart work.
Assessment
Observe accurate building, correct multiplication, and genuine surprise at the growth rate — evidence the number is felt, not just named.
