Geometric Cabinet — Triangles Drawer
Triangles are the foundation of polygon work. Naming them by side-length and by angle trains classification thinking. A mismatched fit catches the error immediately.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Geometric Cabinet
- Level: Ages 4-5
Objectives
- Name the triangles: equilateral, isosceles, scalene, right-angled, acute-angled, obtuse-angled
- Trace each triangle with two fingers
- Classify triangles by sides and by angles
- Prepare for triangle nomenclature and geometry
Materials
- Geometric Cabinet triangles drawer (six triangle insets with frames)
- Three-part cards for each triangle
- Paper and pencil for tracing
Instructions
1. Bring the drawer to a table. 2. Remove three triangles (equilateral, isosceles, scalene). 3. Trace each frame with two fingers. 4. Trace each matching inset. 5. Seat each in its frame. 6. Three-period lesson for the three names. 7. Introduce the three triangles by angle (right, acute, obtuse). 8. Match three-part cards. 9. Note that triangles can be classified two ways at once (e.g., isosceles right triangle).
Educator tip
Pair with the Constructive Triangles to show that every polygon decomposes into triangles. Use sticks or straws to build triangles of each type.
Assessment
Note naming accuracy and understanding of dual classification (sides + angles).
