Geometric Cabinet — Rectangles Drawer
The rectangles drawer isolates proportion. The first inset is a square (equal sides); the last is a long, thin rectangle. The child grades them visually and tactilely. A misplaced inset breaks the proportion gradient.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Geometric Cabinet
- Level: Ages 4-5
Objectives
- Recognize that the rectangle family includes the square
- Grade rectangles from square to elongated
- Trace each rectangle to feel the graded proportion
- Prepare for area and proportion concepts
Materials
- Geometric Cabinet rectangles drawer (six rectangle insets graded from square to long)
- Three-part cards
Instructions
1. Bring the drawer to a table. 2. Remove all six rectangles. 3. Arrange from most square to most elongated. 4. Trace each frame and inset. 5. Seat in frames. 6. Note that the 'square' is also a rectangle (special case). 7. Compare side ratios aloud. 8. Match three-part cards. 9. Find rectangles of varied proportions in the classroom.
Educator tip
The insight that a square IS a rectangle surprises many — a teachable moment about mathematical classification. Celebrate it.
Assessment
Note gradient ordering, tracing precision, and recognition of the square as a rectangle.
