Musical Staff and Note Placement
The staff makes pitch visible. A child who strikes the D bell and places the note on the staff's bottom space has linked ear to eye. A note placed on the wrong line sounds wrong when played — the material is the control.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Auditory Sense
- Level: Ages 5-7
Objectives
- Identify the five lines and four spaces of the treble staff
- Place notes on the staff for each pitch of the bells
- Connect heard pitch to written note
- Prepare for sight-reading
Materials
- Large musical staff (wooden or painted)
- Round wooden notes or magnets to place
- Montessori bells for sounding the pitch
- Treble clef and bass clef pieces
Instructions
1. Lay out the staff. 2. Attach the treble clef at the left. 3. Strike the middle C bell. 4. Place a note below the staff on the ledger line — that's middle C. 5. Strike the D bell. 6. Place a note on the space just below the bottom line. 7. Continue up the scale, placing each note. 8. Read back: each note played from staff placement should match the bell. 9. Introduce the names (E on the bottom line, G-B-D-F across lines, F-A-C-E in spaces for treble).
Educator tip
Start without note names — just placement by pitch. Names come after the spatial mapping is felt. Use the bells alongside so the sound is never separated from the symbol.
Assessment
Note accurate placement, connection of note to pitch, and growing reading fluency.
