Geometric Solids — Matching to Plane Bases

Each solid rests on a plane figure. A cube on a square. A cylinder on a circle. Some solids rest differently on different sides — a rectangular prism rests on a rectangle OR a square. Mismatches show a face that won't sit flat.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Lay out the bases in a row. 2. Take one solid and find its base by testing each plane figure — the solid must sit flush. 3. Place the solid on its matching base. 4. For solids with multiple possible bases, try each. 5. Continue until all solids are placed. 6. Trace each solid's base on paper by pressing down. 7. Label each trace with the solid's name. 8. Compare traces to the bases. 9. Discuss which solids can roll, which cannot, and why.

Educator tip

The sphere has no flat base — it rolls. Children notice this delightful anomaly. Name its 'curved surface' instead of a flat base.

Assessment

Note correct matching, exploration of multiple bases for prisms, and insight into rolling vs stable solids.
