Square Root Material — Introduction
Square root inverts squaring. The board is the control — the right square has exactly n unit pegs. Indirect aim: preparation for irrational numbers, trigonometry, quadratic equations.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Algebraic Sensorial
- Level: Ages 9-11
Objectives
- Understand square root as the side of a square of given area
- Compute √n for perfect squares
- Approximate √n for non-perfect squares
- Apply to Pythagorean problems
Materials
- Square root board with pegs
- Squares 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100
- Calculator for verification
Instructions
1. Present the square of 25 pegs — a 5x5 array. 2. The side is √25 = 5. 3. Present 49 — a 7x7. So √49 = 7. 4. Ask: what about √30? 5. Build a 5x5 (=25) — too small. 6. Build a 6x6 (=36) — too big. 7. So √30 is between 5 and 6. 8. Use a calculator: √30 ≈ 5.477.
Educator tip
The moment a child sees that √30 must be between 5 and 6 is foundational. Don't rush past it.
Assessment
Observe correct square root of perfect squares, approximation method, and verification.
